ID Scanner and My Personal Data

I just went to the store to purchase beer and they scanned my ID in one of those ID Scanners. I’ve never had that happen before and asked why they used an ID Scanner. The clerk just stared back at me. So I did some research on the the ID Scanner web site and it seems like stores use these machines to ensure their employees do a good job checking IDs. So while that is good for the store, I was just wondering what they do with the data. I can’t see why the store needs to keep my personal data. So I asked the manager about the personal data in the machine. He told me they set the PIN code on the scanner and basically locked the unit’s memory down so it couldn’t be accessed. So if he is telling the truth, I guess I its OK that they scanned my ID. But they really need to put up signs which explain what they are collecting and what they will do with the data.
